The Great British Beach Clean

We took part in The Great British Beach Clean. During this week, volunteers all over the country were helping to tidy up coast lines with The Marine Conservation Society. The data collected is then analysed and used to make a positive impact on our world.

We headed to Shoreham-by-the-sea, we were given a 100m stretch of beach and two hours to clean what looked like an already very clean beach. We were instructed to record every bit of litter we found, no matter how small. We divided up into smaller teams, given our litter pickers and off we went. The main things we found were packaging from wrappers and polystyrene but it was surprising once you really looked how much you could find peaking out from the pebbles.

It became like a treasure hunt, especially once we stumbled across huge bits of fishing litter stuck within the rocks, things like part of a boat, rope and plastic boxes all stuck. Lizzie was running the volunteering beach clean and reported it to the council which we were surprised how seriously this was taken, it gave some reassurance that things like this are a priority.

Overall a morning well spent. Til next time beach clean,
